The Macallan Fine & Rare Collection
Vintages presents the Finest Range of Vintage Single Malt Whiskies ever offered for sale in Canada, and The Definitive Guide to Buying Them. It has long been rumoured within the whisky trade and amongst aficionados that The Macallan Distillery held extensive stocks of old malt whisky.
Vintages and Macallan have partnered to reveal all – or at least some – of what Macallan has: the finest range of aged malt whiskies ever offered for sale in Canada.
The Selection
Seven vintages from the 1930s and 40s were bottled between 1969 and 1975 (at between 40 and 31 years old). One, from 1926, was bottled in 1986 (at 60 years old). The rest were bottled in April 2002 from casks filled between 1945 and 1972 that we now deem to be at the peak of their maturity.
The number of bottles available from each year varies, and all are limited editions. Prices range from $1,695 to $54,995 per bottle – but, so everyone can afford to share in this extraordinary event, Macallan has also bottled miniatures of every year (apart from 1926) at prices ranging from $259 to $899.
Each bottle is hand labelled at the distillery as orders are received, with details of strength, content and unique reference number entered on the label, before the final addition of the distillery bottler’s signature.
The Guide
To provide detailed guidance for potential customers and entertainment for everyone else, we have published a splendid little book entitled The Definitive Guide to Buying Vintage Macallan, which is a collector’s item in its own right. Each order will receive a free copy of this book.
This little volume is packed with information, including entertaining essays and anecdotes about diverse aspects of The Macallan by many of the world’s leading whisky writers. It provides hard facts about how The Macallan is made and matured by the people that make it; comforting information about collecting whiskies, and about the unparalleled performance of The Macallan at auction during the past ten years or so, by whisky auctioneer Martin Green; anecdotes from and about the world’s leading collectors of The Macallan single malt whisky; and information about how to buy bottles from the Vintage Selection.
Most important of all, the book provides details about each of the thirty-seven years of The Macallan bottled in the Vintage Selection, together with tasting notes and graphic ‘spider diagram’ depictions of the flavour profile of each.
The Future?
Macallan is opening a ‘Vintage Bottle Register’ at Easter Elchies House, The Macallan’s ‘chateau’ on Speyside, and anyone purchasing a bottle from the Vintage Selection will be entered on the Register. In this way they will be able to guarantee the provenance of bottles which might come up for re-sale and stay in contact with devotees of The Macallan.Further details may be found at the Macallan website, www.themacallan.com.
